Install hardibacker board countertop

Score the top face of the piece from end to end, using hard pressure on the knife to cut through the mesh netting at that face of the piece. Use the edge of the plywood sub-top at the underside of the piece as a guide and score the underside of the piece from end to end. Lift upward on the excess portion of the board to break off the excess piece.

Install backer board at the remaining area of the plywood sub-top and cut off the excess at the edges and ends of the plywood. Cut a strip of nylon mesh tape the length for each joint where two pieces of backer board butt together, using the utility knife.

Apply a uniform layer of latex-fortified mortar from end to end along a joint with a 3-inch-wide plastic putty knife. Install the mesh tape fully in the layer of mortar using the putty knife. Hold the far end of a piece of mesh tape with one hand and pull the putty knife along the joint with medium pressure to embed the mesh in the mortar.

Smooth off the mortar with the utility knife, as necessary, for a uniform surface at the joint. Allow the mortar to dry before installing the ceramic tile.
