Check occasionally to make sure the mast is still tightened to the antenna base. You can have a serious — or even fatal — collision if you drive after drinking. Do not drink and drive or ride with a driver who has been drinking.

Page Control Of A Vehicle Control of a Vehicle The following three systems help to control your vehicle while driving — brakes, steering, and accelerator. At times, as when driving on snow or ice, it is easy to ask more of those control systems than the tires and road can provide. When you start the engine and begin to drive away, ABS will check itself. You might hear a momentary motor or clicking noise while this test is going on, and you might even notice that the brake pedal moves or pulses a little.

In many emergencies, steering can help you more than even the very best braking. When this happens you may notice a reduction in acceleration, or may hear a noise or vibration. Page Steering In Emergencies What should you do if this ever happens? Ease up on the brake or accelerator pedal, steer the vehicle the way you want it to go, and slow down.

Speed limit signs near curves warn that you should adjust your speed. Of course, the posted speeds are based on good weather and road conditions. Page Off-Road Recovery An emergency like this requires close attention and a quick decision. But you have to act fast, steer quickly, and just as quickly straighten the wheel once you have avoided the object. Page Passing Passing Passing another vehicle on a two-lane road can be dangerous. If in doubt, wait.

Page Driving At Night Of course, traction is reduced when water, snow, ice, gravel, or other material is on the road. For safety, you will want to slow down and adjust your driving to these conditions. It is important to slow down on slippery surfaces because stopping distance will be longer and vehicle control more limited. Windows clean — inside and outside? Page If You Are Caught In A Blizzard If your vehicle has a traction system, it will improve your ability to accelerate when driving on a slippery road.

But you can turn the traction system off if you ever need to. You should turn the traction system off if your vehicle ever gets stuck in sand, mud, ice, or snow. Page You can run the engine to keep warm, but be careful. This can cause deadly CO carbon monoxide gas to get inside. CO could overcome you and kill you. You cannot see it or smell it, so you might not know it is in your vehicle. Start the engine again and repeat this only when you feel really uncomfortable from the cold.

But do it as little as possible. Preserve the fuel as long as you can. To help keep warm, you can get out of the vehicle and do some fairly vigorous exercises every half hour or so until help comes.

Turn off any traction or stability system. The tire and loading information label shows the number of occupant seating positions A , and the maximum vehicle capacity weight B in kilograms Determine the combined weight of the driver and passengers that will be riding in your vehicle.

See Roadside Assistance Program on page Page Level Control Level Control On vehicles equipped with automatic level control, the rear of the vehicle is automatically kept level as you load or unload your vehicle. See Loading Your Vehicle on page You may hear the compressor operating when you load or unload your vehicle, and periodically as the system self-adjusts. Trailering is different than just driving your vehicle by itself. Trailering means changes in handling, acceleration, braking, durability, and fuel economy.

It depends on how you plan to use your rig. For example, speed, altitude, road grades, outside temperature, and how much your vehicle is used to pull a trailer are all important. It can also depend on any special equipment that you have on your vehicle, and the amount of tongue weight the vehicle can carry. Page Weight Of The Trailer Tongue Weight of the Trailer Tongue The tongue load A of any trailer is an important weight to measure because it affects the total or gross weight of your vehicle.

The Gross Vehicle Weight GVW includes the curb weight of the vehicle, any cargo you may carry in it, and the people who will be riding in the vehicle. Page Consider the following example: A vehicle model base weight is 5, lbs 2 kg ; 2, lbs 1 kg at the front axle and 2, lbs 1 kg at the rear axle. The only way to be sure you are not exceeding any of these ratings is to weigh your vehicle and trailer.

It can cause unconsciousness or death. See Engine Exhaust on page Page Making Turns Towing a trailer requires a certain amount of experience. Before setting out for the open road, you will want to get to know your rig. Acquaint yourself with the feel of handling and braking with the added weight of the trailer. And always keep in mind that the vehicle you are driving is now a good deal longer and not nearly as responsive as your vehicle is by itself.

Page Section 5 Tire Inspection and Rotation You will receive genuine GM parts and GM-trained and supported service people. Page California Perchlorate Materials Requirements California Perchlorate Materials Requirements Certain types of automotive applications, such as airbag initiators, seat belt pretensioners, and lithium batteries contained in remote keyless entry transmitters, may contain perchlorate materials.

Special handling may be necessary. For additional information, see www. Page Fuel Fuel Use of the recommended fuel is an important part of the proper maintenance of your vehicle. Page Additives Additives To provide cleaner air, all gasolines in the United States are now required to contain additives that help prevent engine and fuel system deposits from forming, allowing the emission control system to work properly. In most cases, you should not have to add anything to the fuel.

However, some gasolines contain only the minimum amount of additive required to meet U. The U. Department of Energy has an alternative fuels website www.

Those stations that do have E85 should have a label indicating ethanol content. To help avoid injuries to you and others, read and follow all the instructions on the pump island.

Turn off your engine when you are refueling. Do not smoke if you are near fuel or refueling your vehicle. If you spill fuel and then something ignites it, you could be badly burned. This spray can happen if your tank is nearly full, and is more likely in hot weather.

Open the fuel cap slowly and wait for any hiss noise to stop. Static electricity discharge from the container can ignite the fuel vapor. You can be badly burned and your vehicle damaged if this occurs. Pull the hood release handle with this symbol on it. Go to the front of the vehicle and push the underhood release to the right. Page Engine Oil A. Underhood Fuse Block. See Underhood Fuse Block on page See Jump Starting on page Windshield Washer Fluid Reservoir. Radiator Pressure Cap.

See Radiator Pressure Cap on page This section explains what kind of oil to use. Both provide easier cold starting and better protection for the engine at extremely low temperatures. Whenever the oil is changed, reset the system so it can calculate when the next oil change is required. Remove the two clamps on the duct. Remove the duct.

Park your vehicle on a level place. Keep the engine running. With your foot on the brake pedal, move the shift lever through each gear range, pausing for about three seconds in each range. Use only the proper mixture of the engine coolant listed in this manual for the cooling system. Page Radiator Pressure Cap Occasionally check the coolant level in the radiator. For information on how to add coolant to the radiator, see Cooling System on page Radiator Pressure Cap Notice: The radiator cap on your vehicle is a pressure-type cap and must be tightly installed to prevent coolant loss and possible engine damage from overheating.

Radiator C. Electric Engine D. Do not touch them. If you do, you can be burned. Do not run the engine if there is a leak. If you run the engine, it could lose all coolant. You can add the proper coolant mixture directly to the radiator, but be sure the cooling system is cool before you do it. Coolant contains ethylene glycol and it will burn if the engine parts are hot enough. Do not spill coolant on a hot engine. See Engine Compartment Overview on page for reservoir location.

See Engine Compartment Overview on page for the location of the reservoir. See Recommended Fluids and Lubricants on page This helps keep dirt from entering the reservoir.

Disc brake pads have built-in wear indicators that make a high-pitched warning sound when the brake pads are worn and new pads are needed.

Its many parts have to be of top quality and work well together if the vehicle is to have really good braking. Your vehicle was designed and tested with top-quality brake parts. When you replace parts of the braking system — Be sure to use the following steps to do it safely.

On vehicles equipped with the optional power sliding door, a low-voltage battery or replacing a battery may cause the system to become inoperative. Page Notice: If you leave your radio or other accessories on during the jump starting procedure, they could be damaged.

Always turn off your radio and other accessories when jump starting your vehicle. People have been hurt doing this, and some have been blinded. Be sure the battery has enough water. You do not need to add water to the battery installed in your new vehicle. Page 7. Do not let the other end touch metal. For proper type and length, see Normal Maintenance Replacement Parts on page Page Tires Tires Your new vehicle comes with high-quality tires made by a leading tire manufacturer. If you ever have questions about your tire warranty and where to obtain service, see your vehicle Warranty booklet for details.

The examples below show a typical passenger vehicle tire and a compact spare tire sidewall. For more information see Uniform Tire Quality Grading on page Air pressure is expressed in pounds per square inch psi or kilopascal kPa. Accessory Weight This means the combined weight of optional accessories. Page Load Index An assigned number ranging from 1 to that corresponds to the load carrying capacity of a tire.

The maximum air pressure is molded onto the sidewall. Sustained high-speed driving causes excessive heat build up and can cause sudden tire failure. You could have a crash and you or others could be killed. This device may not cause harmful interference. Page Tire Inspection And Rotation 6. Remove the valve cap from the valve cap stem. Do not include the compact spare tire in the tire rotation.

Use only radial-ply tires with the wheels on your vehicle. Page Uniform Tire Quality Grading Uniform Tire Quality Grading Quality grades can be found where applicable on the tire sidewall between tread shoulder and maximum section width.

Sustained high temperature can cause the material of the tire to degenerate and reduce tire life, and excessive temperature can lead to sudden tire failure. This way, you will be sure to have the right wheel, wheel bolts, wheel nuts, and TPMS sensors for your vehicle.

There is not enough clearance. Tire chains used on a vehicle without the proper amount of clearance can cause damage to the brakes, suspension or other vehicle parts. The area damaged by the tire chains could cause you to lose control of your vehicle and you or others may be injured in a crash. It includes a foot 6 m hose with an air pressure gage and nozzle adapters.

If air goes out of a tire, it is much more likely to leak out slowly. See Hazard Warning Flashers on page for more information. Open the liftgate. See Liftgate on page for more information. Page 5. Separate the plastic pouch from the jack and remove the jacking tools, including the folding wrench and extension, from the pouch. The tools you will be using include the jack A , extension B , and folding wrench C. The compact spare tire is located under the rear of the vehicle.

Tilt the retainer at the end of the cable to remove the compact spare tire, so it can be pulled up through the wheel opening. Front Location B. Rear Location Notice: If your vehicle has wheel locks and an impact wrench is used to remove the wheel nuts, the lock nut or wheel lock key could be damaged.

Do not use an impact wrench to remove the wheel nuts if your vehicle has wheel locks. If the vehicle slips off the jack, you could be badly injured or killed. Never get under a vehicle when it is supported only by a jack.

Raise the vehicle by turning the folding wrench clockwise in the jack. Because the nuts might come loose. Remove any rust or dirt from the wheel bolts, mounting surfaces and spare wheel. Page Lower the vehicle by attaching the folding wheel wrench to the jack and turning the wrench counterclockwise. Lower the jack completely. This could lead to a crash. If you have to replace them, be sure to get new original equipment wheel nuts.

Page Secondary Latch System If you try to put a wheel cover on the compact spare, the cover or the spare could be damaged. If the spare tire does not slide off the jack completely, make sure no one is behind you or on either side of you as you pull the jack out from the under spare. Turn the folding wrench clockwise to raise the jack until it lifts the secondary latch device under the wheel plate.

This lets you know that the secondary latch has released. In a sudden stop or collision, loose equipment could strike someone. Store all these in the proper place. Page To store the spare tire: 1. Lay the tire near the rear of the vehicle with the valve stem down. Remove the small center cap by tapping the back of the cap with the extension of the shaft, if the vehicle has aluminum wheels.
