He wanted to make his own fireworks and collected gun powder in a glass. So screwing the lid on the glass while there was still remainder of the gun powder on the edge of the glass wasn't the best idea. He was a child back than, he wore a prosthetic eye for many years but prefered the patch later. He had a glass eye in the 70s and just got tired of wearing it.
