Norton antivirus tray icon

My hunch is that there's something wrong with the development enviroment, due to the changes imposed by the advent of a new platform, Windows 8. Original poster had a 64bit system. One works OK, the other doesn't. See the post from Guru dickevans at my link mentioned above i.

Try and download a trial version of NAV from the Symantec site. I think it's still the main NAV product posted. Uninstall NAV Otherwise you'll probably will have to purchase a new subscription, but at least NAV is still available at least as of a few days ago. Windows Vista Home Premium, SP2, bit - takes 1min 20secs for icon to appear after desktop and other icons appear. Back to top. Registriert: Danksagungen 2 Stats.

Any help? Thank you. Ich habe die gleiche Frage 0. Danksagungen 0. Newfan Teilnehmer 4. Shep1 Teilnehmer 4. Hi there, I'm new to this so any advice would be really appreciated. Edjr60 Norton-Titan Danksagungen 1 Stats. Hi Shep1, NIS is just fresh out of beta and in it's first week of release. Hi Ed Thanks for the advice. I'll let you know what happens in the morning - and thanks again for your support. Jimbo40 Sammler 7.

I received a new hard drive today and reinstalled NIS. Didn't know that it would be NIS I just got off with Technical Support and they remote in. Checked everything and was fine. Was told that this is a known issue and it would be escalated. I too see the red X briefly in the system tray icon. Lakes34 Aktiver Teilnehmer 5. Hi again After yesterdays red cross on system tray icon I promised to post what happened today. I guess this shows it's working now - or at least for today Thanks for all your help.

Hi again Ed Thanks so much for explaining that - I really appreciate your help. Hi Shep1, More than glad to be of some help. MyaR41 Teilnehmer 4.

Keep up the great work Norton! Hi Pvmikey, There have been three or four other posts on this matter. LazarusLong Aktiver Teilnehmer 5. Dear Symantec, Is there any official word from you regarding this? Count me in with getting rid of the Facebook on my toolbar and bringing back the Widget too! Malone Teilnehmer 4. Sometimes it does not appear at all until I 'manually start ', by clicking on desktop icon.

Has nobody else noticed that apart from the very slow sys tray icon appearing You try a pc start and immediately try IE9 Looks like the toolbar isn't fully operational until that sys tray icon appears if you ask me. I have noticed that despite the icon eventually being there Norton takes its sweet time to open.

And I 'hate' the new interface - yellow on grey - doesn't suit the tinted specs I have to wear. First thing I do every morning before anything else is run 'live update'. Grumpster Aktiver Teilnehmer 5.

Same here on Win 7 SP1 64x. IE9 waits until Norton is loaded. Really bad behavior. An excellent respone from bombastus from a similar thread: No, the GUI Graphic User Interface part of the program is not the protection part of the program.

I add to the long list of people who have these issues. Work hard Symantec, users pay and expect always the best from you. I'm one of them since ! Boony Zu Besuch 2. I've got to disagree with fred "Once the icon appears, there should be two ccsvchst. So is something wrong - system not being fully protected?

And just look at that 'memory usage'. Bombastus Norton-Titan Thank Bombastus What fred had said got me rather worried, now reassured. RAM useage has now settled down to K. Cheers Malone. Cheers Malone You need to click the "Show processes for all users"-button in the Task Manager to see the second one.

Thanks everyone for posting the issue. We are tracking this issue internally. Thanks for working on this issue. I agree with Bombastus The second ccsvchst is visible only clicking on "Show processes for all users" because it's related to the System and it's hidden according the UAC default setting.

Thanks again Bombastus No I hadn't - Doh! Yes they are both there. Slaps self around head. New viruses are created and distributed every day. Virus protection software such as McAfee VirusScan, works with virus definition files to detect and remove viruses.

To be effective, the virus definitions must be updated frequently. McAfee VirusScan uses a facility called AutoUpdate to download and install virus definition files directly over the internet.

Prior to downloading. I upgraded from Norton antivirus to yesterday and now when i start my computer the icon in system tray takes min to load. With it was loading immediatly. I tried to change Boot Time protection to "normal", "aggressive", "off" and still the same thing.

Then when I update the program eg definitions etc and then try to close the window by pressing the X in the top right hand corner, it will take around 30 seconds to close. I also upgraded to NIS on 5th Sept. On start up this morning I found the NIS icon took a minute or so to load and had a red cross.

Once the internet icon in the system tray appeared the red cross turned to a green tick. Is this normal? Is my PC still protected during the time the red cross is showing or do I need to alter any settings? NIS is just fresh out of beta and in it's first week of release.

That being said, there are some things to check. Concerning the red x at startup, that shouldn't be happening. Do you have any other anti-virus software on your system? Are there any stand alone products that run, scan or monitor in real time? Usually paid products.

These will not be compatible with NIS. If there are, they would need to be uninstalled, because they would be conflicting with NIS at startup and NIS in general. Also, run Norton Autofix. It can fix things it may find. Run liveupdate manually until there are no updates left, rebooting as many times as prompted After checking for updates and even if no reboot is required, restart the computer anyway and watch the tray icons.

If still starting out with a red x or fixed by starting with the green check, report back and let us know. You mentioned your settings. If you have never changed or adjusted your settings, they at the least should be at the default level for all categories, which provides adequate protection.

Thanks for the advice. I think things may be OK now - that said I want to wait and recheck tomorrow. I don't have any other anti virus software and NIS is the only anti virus software I've ever had. I have manually run live update until there are none required, and also run the Norton Autofix which says everything is OK. So all seems good. Just to be sure though - I want to check what happens overnight as my PC is usually off for around 12 hours or more at times, so I guess the live update may be 'out of date' when I restart tomorrow.

In Win 7 64 bit , same settings are used for initial installation, same results with Use Defaults for that Section - however there is still the extra long delay with the Norton Icon in the system tray as others are experienciing.

Boot Time Protection is set to Off Default. Anyone else notice anything else that was changed betwwen the Help information, the default settings and the actual settings in NIS when it is installed? Even changing Boot Time protection settings didn't help.

Upon boot-up, the icon in the bottom right system tray shows a red X for a few minutes-then changes to green. Is anyone else experiencing this or can anyone from Norton confirm that this is a known documented issue? I just got off with Technical Support and was told that this was a known issue after they remote into my computer and checked everything else. The situation I have on two Windows 7 sp1 64 bit computers is that the Norton icon displays seconds after the screen is shown. Boot time is set to normal.

Should the boot time be set to aggressive or is this delay OK because NIS is working in the background on the version. On start up this morning PC off 8 hours the NIS icon appeared green ticked straight away in the system tray. Incidently, after start up this morning and because the live update hadn't been run for 8 hours I manually ran it.

It failed to apply all of the updates and took 3 goes to sucessfully complete. Any one know if this is normal? Or should I ask in another thread? Sorry I'm very new to posting. This happens from time to time. It is generally server related. There is nothing to worry about.

The general rule is, when you see you have some failed updates, try again later. Just make sure your pulse updates are getting through during a period of failed updates. Then you're protected. To see an example of liveupdate failing on certain updates, Click Here to see a thread from last month. There was around an eight hour period when some of the updates weren't downloading. One thing that remained consistent throughout, was that pulse updates continued to download, keeping users protected.

Click Here to see what a group of updates look like when failing to download. They look more frightening than what they really are, because everything is in red, when in these cases it's usually server related.

I had a couple of failed Activity Map updates earlier today, but that straightened out right away. I am experiencing the same here. The icon in the systray takes a couple of minutes to appear on both systems.

NIS never did this. I also have 2 SSD drives. I don't know if that matters at all, but someone else mentioned the SSD thing above my post. I have no other security software installed. Can someone from Norton look into this problem or provide insight why the behavior change in NIS I am more then willing to help with troubleshooting or providing logs or any other info needed to track down this issue, if it truely is an issue.

I'm having the same problem as others on this message thread. I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium bit. When I was using Internet Security , the system tray icon loaded right away upon boot up.

Now, with Internet Security , the system tray icon requires minutes to load upon boot up. Also, the first time that I try to open Norton following boot-up, IS takes minutes to open. After that, it opens normally, until I shut down the computer. Then, the cycle begins all over once again. There have been three or four other posts on this matter. Search for that post from a few days ago and it should answer your question.

My Windows 7 64 bit computer takes 60 seconds to load the second service you'll read about. I don't look at it as much of a problem anymore if that helps. Take Care. Icon appear after minutes. Before I have , removed with NRT and did clean install.
